THE first feature film by Melbourne writer and director Sarah Watt has won a major Canadian award at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Look Both Ways won the Discovery Award, which was presented on Saturday night.

The $3.2 million feature, which stars Watt's husband, William McInnes, and Justine Clarke, Anthony Hayes and Andrew S. Gilbert, was filmed in South Australia last year and follows the intersecting lives of seven characters dealing with the aftermath of a fatal train accident. It combines live action with Watt's hand-painted animation.

Ong Bak, the Thai martial arts extravaganza that launched Tony Jaa as a global superstar and world class action athlete is rocketing off retailer shelves, with 40,000 units shipped in the first week of release.

The double disc has proved to be a resolute success for Melbourne's Madman/ AV Channel, who released the DVD on its Eastern Eye label after a year long awareness campaign that commenced with closing night festival screenings, a national theatrical campaign helmed by Madman Cinema grossing $550,000,and an unprecedented marketing/media campaign across paid advertising, direct, on-line & viral marketing and widespread publicity coverage generating enormous awareness at an estimated value of $250,000.

Ong Bak is proving a serious proposition in both the rental and retail sectors, debuting at number 8 on Video Ezy's rental chart , behind a line up of $1,000,000 + theatrical releases, and hitting number 6 on the GFK chart of September 6 (behind huge Hollywood titles such as Sahara, Hitch and Troy).

Eastern Eye is a label dedicated to bringing the vanguard feature films of the new Asian cinema frontier to Australia. The latest action, horror and drama based features from Thailand, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, China and other Asian territories comprise the label, which has made serious inroads into the Australian marketplace since it was launched in February 2004.

AV Channel Director of Sales and Marketing Rebecca Shand said the runaway success of Ong Bak would reinforce Eastern Eye as the premiere Asian Cinema label in Australia and further enhance the profile of the Asian cinema genre in this country.

"These exceptional sales results for Ong Bak confirm our long standing belief in the film's breakout potential ; there can be no doubt that non traditional Asian cinema fans are buying Ong Bak in their droves ; this can only mean great ongoing awareness for Eastern Eye as a label going forward. The campaign behind Ong Bak has also proven that an independent distributor such as AV Channel can leverage considerable value and unit numbers with the right marketing mix, packaging and individual retailer initiatives. Ong Bak has all the makings of an strong ongoing catalogue seller ; we expect sales to be strong over the course of its life, not just in this initial sales phase"

The AV Channel will release 'Born to Fight' , a action film produced by the creators of Ong Bak on November 16, through the Eastern Eye label delivering yet another hard hitting contender on the ever growing Asian cinema category.

Madman Entertainment are proud to announce the acquisition of collected works of the 20th Century greatest cinematic mavericks. Germany's Wim Wenders and the late US director Russ Meyer. The collected works of both directors will be released through Madman's Directors' Suite imprint, which is a recently established label that showcases specially curated collections of influential cinema from around the globe. It is dedicated to those films and those auteurs past and present who dare to break boundaries and set standards, as well as rarely-exhibited classic, art-house and world cinema. Since its inception in early 2005, Directors Suite has released specially curated collections by directors Jim Jarmusch and Buster Keaton.

Wim Wenders, the German director known for his films invoking a strong sense of cultural clash between Europe and The United States, a love of rock n roll and an evolving sense of internationalism has an extraordinary body of works in his canon, many unseen in Australia. Well known for the Palm D or winning classic Paris, Texas -his collaboration with noted US playwright Sam Shepard, starring Harry Dean Stanton - and his worldwide smash 'The Buena Vista Social Club' , Wenders? output through the 70s was highly prolific. Through films such as The American Friend and Kings of the Road, Wenders both displayed his reverence to the German national cinema and directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, but also established an entirely new individual celluloid voice in the divided Germany of pre-1989. His 1988 film Wings of Desire won him the Best Director award at Cannes in 1988, cementing his reputation as one of the major modern directors of the 20th Century. Madman will also be using Wenders 1985 documentary Tokyo Ga as an extra on the December release of the Yasujiro Ozu film Tokyo Story.

The late Russ Meyer, the infamous director of b-grade classics Faster Pussycat Kill Kill! and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, who died in 2004, cut his teeth on 'nudie' films before defining a genre of camp, 'smutty' pictures that whilst always chauvinistic and cavalier, were never demeaning to their cast members. Often namechecked as The Fellini of the Sex Industry, Meyers iconic works of high camp have become part of the cultural tapestry of modern pop art; his influence can be still be felt across the modern fashion, music and advertising industries . A former combat photographer, he channeled his personal obsession (large breasted women) via the medium of filmmaking, turning a hobby into box-office receipts. Meyer was a director, writer, and producer, and was often described as a commando moviemaking force.

Directors Suite Label Manager Alexander Strang says the acquisition of the respective catalogues represents a major step forward for Directors Suite

The label is all about presenting the collected works of selected directors with top of the line transfers and presenting them in a fashion that faithfully illustrates their contribution to the world of film. In the case of Wenders and Meyer, you have two vastly different directors, with completely different methods ; yet they both fit into the Directors Suite ideal. Fans of both these directors will not be disappointed!

Melbourne comedian Tim Minchin has won the prestigious Perrier Award for Best Newcomer at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Perrier Award for Best Comedy Show was created in 1981 and is the most coveted comedy prize in the world.

The Best Newcomer category was added in 1992 and is open to any original cabaret, comedy, sketch or stand-up act longer than fifty minutes performed by someone that hasn't already achieved star status. Minchin also received Australian acclaim earlier this year for his act Darkside.

Combining music, comedy, poetry, his stage performance won the Director's Choice award at the 2005 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Tim Minchin is "a brilliant virtuoso pianist" bright, quirky and hugely entertaining... It's the sort of all-round package of genius that could drive other comics furious with envy "Impeccable stuff."CHORTLE.CO.UK
